About me

Research Interest

I have devoted my scientific career to deciphering the role of CB 1 receptors in brain pathophysiology using a variety of experimental approaches that include biochemical and radioligand binding methods, electrophysiology, live cell imaging tecnhiques and rodent models of demyelination, among others. A main objective of my research activity is to evaluate the involvement of CB 1R populations located in glial cells in the cellular processes that govern white matter damage/repair and determine their usefulness as therapeutic targets in multiple sclerosis (MS). My work in this field has allowed defining the presence and functional significance of CB 1R in oligodendrocyte populations (Mato et al., Glia 2009; Manterola et al., Front Neuroanat 2022; Sanchez-de-la-Torre et al., Cell Death Dis 2022), the potential of targeting endocannabinoid hydrolysis in MS (Bernal-Chico et al., Glia 2015; Manterola et al., Neuropharmacology 2018) and more recently, the adaptations in endocannabinoid signaling in astrocytes and microglia during autoimmune demyelination (Moreno-García et al., Biomolecules 2020).
