Mar Marquez wins the Hika Ateneo – CIC bioGUNE scientific photo contest

05 Dec 2020

The photo entitled “Sign of danger” won the first prize of this contest.

Our colleague Mar Marquez Ropero, predoctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Glial Cell Biology won the first prize of the first edition of the Scientific Photo Contest launched by Hika Ateneo and CIC bioGUNE.

Hika Ateneo a cultural organisation in Bilbao and CIC bioGUNE, the Basque research and innovation organisation launched in 2019 the first edition of their Scientific Photo Contest, to increase awareness about scientific research, and also to get closer the work of researchers, to the general public.

The photo by Mar Marquez entitled “Sign of danger” shows a part of the brain (the dentate gyrus) a mouse 1 month old, 6 hours after being subjected to radiation.

The objective of this experiment was to understand the role of microglia in the phagocytosis of brain cells, so the researchers produced the increase of microglial activity, shown in the picture (in green), interacting with neural stem cells (red), and astrocytes (purple).

Zorionak Mar! Congratulations for the prize, but mainly for the good work.
